Deadline for registration as OCI cardholders by erstwhile PIO cardholders

1. The deadline for conversion of PIO cards to OCI cards has been fixed by Govt. of India as December 31, 2017 and there will be no further extension of the current deadline

2. The conversion of PIO card to OCI card before December 31, 2017 is gratis. Any request for conversion of PIO card to OCI card after the expiry of the current deadline of December 31, 2017, will attract a fee of EURO 219 which is same as charged for issuance of fresh OCI card.

3. Please note that those travelling to India on the strength of their PIO cards (handwritten) after ICAO’s rules/ guidelines (with respect to travel with machine readable travel documents) come into effect from October / November, 2018, will be refused entry at the Indian immigration counters and sent back.

Person of Indian Origin (PIO) Card withdrawal

This is to inform that vide Gazette Notification No.26011/01/2014IC.I dated 09.01.2015, all PIO cards issued till 09.01.2015 are deemed to be OCI card. PIO Card scheme has been withdrawn videGazette Notification No.25024/9/2014F.I dated 09.01.2015.  Henceforth, applicants may apply for OCI card ONLY, as PIO card scheme is no longer in existence.

The Embassy of India Lisbon will therefore not be issuing any fresh PIO Cards with effect from 9 January 2015. All PIO Card applications received before 9 January 2015 and pending with the Embassy will be returned to the applicants with the request to apply for OCI card on the fee already paid for the PIO Card.

In case the PIO card holder has new passport then he/she can travel to India on their new passport with the valid PIO card and old passport.
