Deadline for registration as OCI cardholders by erstwhile PIO cardholders
 

It has been decided with the approval of the competent authority, that the Bureau of Immigration(BOI) will accept the PIO as valid travel documents till 30th September, 2019 along with valid foreign passport and the Indian Immigration Check Post(s) will continue to consider all PIO cards valid for exit/entry into India till 30th September 2019.

The extension of the timeline is subject to the consideration that if in the meanwhile any deadline is notified by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) thereby making handwritten PIO cards invalid then PIO cardholder may have to obtain appropriate visa from Indian Missions/Posts abroad.

All the PIO cardholders with valid PIO cards as on 09/01/2015 to apply for conversion of PIO card to OCI card.

 

Person of Indian Origin (PIO) Card withdrawal


This is to inform that vide Gazette Notification No.26011/01/2014IC.I dated 09.01.2015, all PIO cards issued till 09.01.2015 are deemed to be OCI card. PIO Card scheme has been withdrawn videGazette Notification No.25024/9/2014F.I dated 09.01.2015.  Henceforth, applicants may apply for OCI card ONLY, as PIO card scheme is no longer in existence.

The Embassy of India Lisbon will therefore not be issuing any fresh PIO Cards with effect from 9 January 2015. All PIO Card applications received before 9 January 2015 and pending with the Embassy will be returned to the applicants with the request to apply for OCI card on the fee already paid for the PIO Card.

In case the PIO card holder has new passport then he/she can travel to India on their new passport with the valid PIO card and old passport.
