- With effect from 23rd January, 2019,Government of India has introduced mandatory bio-metrics for all OCI applicants . The applicants will have the option of giving biometrics at the application stage or at the Immigration Check Posts on arrival in India. Applicants are, however, advised to give biometrics at the application stage itself i.e. at the document verification stage. If for any reason the applicant is not able to give the biometrics at the application stage which shall be informed to the Indian Mission/Post concerned in writing), his/her biometrics shall be captured at the Immigration Check Posts (ICPs) on arrival in India.
Biometrics of fingerprints of existing OCI cardholders shall be captured at the Immigration Check Posts (ICPs) during their entry/exit at the ICPs whenever they travel to/from India.
Biometrics captured would be valid for next 5 years from the date of enrollment and applicants would not be required to be enrolled again within 5 years, if they have already enrolled their biometrics. Applicants above 70 years of age or below 12 years of age would be exempted from biometric capturing.

- OCI Applications are accepted only on Wednesdays between 09:30h and 12:00 h.
- If the supporting documents are not satisfactory applicant will be asked to provide more Documentary evidence.
- It is an offence to knowingly furnish false information or to suppress material information when applying for OCI.
- The grant of OCI card does not entitle the holder to visit Restricted/Protected areas without prior specific permission to visit such areas.
- OCI card does not entitle the holder to undertake missionary, mountaineering or research work without prior permission to undertake such activities.

A. Submission of documents. Where?
After the applicant submits the complete application online including documents, photograph and signature, the copies of the supporting documents have to be submitted to the Indian Mission/ Post concerned for prior verification. The Indian Missions / Posts will be responsible for verifying the supporting documents.
If there is any deficiency in the application/ uploaded documents/ photographs, the Indian Mission/ Post concerned shall inform the same to the applicant telephonically or by email.

FAQ’s
- Do I have to fill all columns when filling up the application online?
Yes. It is mandatory that no column is left unanswered.
- What are the eligibility criteria for minor applicants to get OCI?
One of the parents should be eligible for OCI.
- Are 'Empire of India' Passports issued by the British authorities in India prior to Indian Independence accepted as a proof of Indian Origin?
No, if they state the National Status of the holder as British subject by birth. Yes, if they state the National Status of the holder as person of British Protectorate, originally a citizen of a place in India.
- Is there an emergency service for OCI?
No. If you are travelling in the near future and have an emergency, please apply for visa.
- What is the processing time of application?
Around 4-5 weeks. As shown above, applicants are required to check the status on MHA website. No separate intimation will be sent to the applicant about the status of their application.
- How long will it take for my OCI card to be ready?
We expect the OCI cards to be ready for collection at the Embassy of India, Lisbon, in approximately 5-6 weeks. No enquiry would be entertained before 5 weeks from date of submission of application.
- Facing problems relating to access to online registration for fresh application or transfer through miscellaneous registration. What should I do?
