TYPES OF VISAS AND NECESSARY DOCUMENTS

For all types of visas, if applicant is minor:

1. If travelling with both parents - a copy of the citizen card / ID of both parents and of the child should also be submitted along with the application.

2. If travelling with only one parent only - a copy of the citizen card / ID of both parents and of the child. In addition a letter authorising the child to travel with the other parent, from the parent who will not travel with the child (original copy authenticated by a notary) should be submitted. 

3. If travelling with other family members or friends - the same as in (i) but this time both parents must give permission and the person travelling with the child will need to provide his identification.

All Foreign documents submitted for any visa type such as Birth certificate, Marriage certificate, etc not issued by Portuguese Authorities have to be apostille by the competent authority.

TOURIST VISA

This category of visa will be applicable to foreign nationals whose sole objective of visiting India is for recreation, sightseeing, casual visit to meet friends or relatives, attending a short term yoga programme, short duration medical treatment including treatment under Indian systems of medicine, short term courses on local languages, music, dance, arts & crafts, cooking, medicine etc. which should not be a formal or structured course/ programme (courses not exceeding 6 months duration and not issued with a qualifying certificate/ diploma etc.), and voluntary work of short duration (for a maximum period of one month, which do not involve any monetary payment or consideration of any kind in return). etc. and no other purpose/ activity.

Generally, the Embassy of India issues a visa valid for 1 year; however these are not given by default. Applicants can be granted a lesser duration if a lesser duration is written on the application form and/if the consular services decide to do so. In such cases, visa fees remain unchanged. Please note that the Tourist visa cannot be exchanged and cannot be extended in India.

BUSINESS VISA

This category of visa will be applicable to foreign nationals who wish to visit India to/for:- 

  • establish an industrial/business venture or to explore possibilities to set up an industrial/business venture, other than Proprietorship Firms and Partnership Firms, in India. 

  • purchase/sell industrial products or commercial products or consumer durables. 

  • technical meetings/discussions, attending Board meetings or general meetings for providing business services support.

  • recruitment of manpower. 

  • Foreign nationals who are partners in the business and/or functioning as Directors of the company. 

  • consultations regarding exhibitions or for participation in exhibitions, trade fairs, business fairs etc. 

  • transact business with suppliers/potential suppliers at locations in India, to evaluate or monitor quality, give specifications, place orders, negotiate further supplies etc., relating to goods or services procured from India. 

  • Foreign experts/specialists on a visit of short duration in connection with an ongoing project with the objective of monitoring the progress of the work, conducting meetings with Indian customers and/or to provide technical guidance. 

  • Pre-sales or post-sales activity not amounting to actual execution of any contract or project. 

  • Foreign trainees of multinational companies/corporate houses coming for in-house training in the regional hubs of the concerned company located in India. 

  • Foreign nationals coming as tour conductors and travel agents and /or conducting business tours of foreigners or business relating to it, etc. 

  • Foreign academicians/ experts coming under GIAN (Global Initiative for Academic Networks). 

  • Crew members of scheduled/ non-scheduled flights operated by scheduled airlines, non-scheduled and chartered flights operated by non-scheduled airlines and special flights. 

  • Foreign nationals intending to visit India to participate in cultural events/ activities with remuneration. 

  • Foreign nationals who are engaged in commercial sports events in India on contract

JOURNALIST VISA

This category of visa will be applicable to foreign nationals:- 

  • who are professional journalists, photographers, documentary film producers or Directors (other than of commercial films), representatives of a radio and/or television organization, travel writers/ travel promotion photographers etc; 

  • who are Journalists visiting India for any other purpose, such as attending a Conference, tourism, meeting relatives etc.

FILM VISA

This category of visa will be applicable to foreign nationals who wish to visit India to shoot a feature film/ reality TV & Web Shows/Series, Commercial TV Serials/ Shows and Web Shows/ Series in India

CONFERENCE VISA

This category of visa will be applicable to foreign nationals whose sole objective for visiting India is to attend a conference / seminar or workshop.

MEDICAL VISA

This category of visa will be applicable to foreign nationals whose sole purpose is to seek Medical treatment in established/recognized/specialized hospitals/treatment centers in India.

TRANSIT VISA

This category of visa will be applicable to foreign nationals whose sole purpose of enabling him/ her to travel through India to a destination outside India.

MOUNTAINEERING VISA

This category of visa will be applicable to foreign nationals whose sole purpose of visiting India is for mountaineering/trekking expeditions.

MISSIONARY VISA

This category of visa will be applicable for foreign nationals whose sole objective of visiting India is Missionary work

Checklist for Missionary Visa

DIPLOMATIC/OFFICIAL VISA

The following documents are required for visa applications for persons holding diplomatic / official / UN passports:

 INFORMATION REGARDING MOU

 Online visa application form duly filled in (https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/

  • Passport with validity of not less than six months and must have at least three blank pages. 

  • Note verbale from Ministry of Foreign Affairs / Embassy / Diplomatic Organization. 

  • Two passport size photos (5X5cm) 

  • Applicants are requested to ensure details entered on the Visa application form must be exactly as in the Passport or else the visa application will be rejected. 

STUDENT VISA

This category of visa allows you to travel to India to study at a university or technological institute, take part in an academic exchange program, follow a course in Yoga, Vedic culture, Indian systems of dance and music, professors or scholars intending to conduct research work in India and applicants intending to pursue internship in an Indian Company/Educational Institution/NGO, Foreign Missions/Posts and foreign government organizations in India.

SUB CATEGORIES OF STUDENT VISA:

  • S-1: For higher education (including in South Asian University and Nalanda University), provisional student visa, for short term courses and those coming under Student Exchange Programme. 

  • S-2: For school education 

  • S-3: For studies in Yoga, Vedic culture and Indian systems of Music and Dance and Buddhist studies 

  • S-4: For Theological studies and for Missionary students 

  • S-5: For Research scholar, visiting Research faculty, research scholar on bilateral exchange programme, members of Botanical, Scientific, Anthropological etc expeditions 

  • S-6: For those coming for internship in India (including those coming under French VIE programme). 

  • S-1X/S-3X/S-5X: For dependents of those coming under S-1 and S-3 and S-5 visas. 

  • Applicants intending to pursue internship in India are required to meet the following conditions: 

  • The Internship Visa will be granted at any time during the course of study; or immediately after completion of graduation/ post-graduation (masters level) but the commencement of the internship should not be more than two years. 

  • Visa will be granted only on the basis of a letter from the Indian Company/Educational Institution/NGO, Foreign Missions/Posts in India and foreign government organizations concerned sponsoring the applicant for the internship programme and clearly indicating the period of internship. 

  • In case of internship in a Company, the applicant being sponsored for internship should draw a minimum remuneration of Rs.3.60 Lakhs per annum. There will be no minimum salary limit in case of internship in Educational Institutions, NGOs, Foreign Missions/Posts in India and foreign government organizations. 

  • Earnings from internship of the applicant with Indian companies/Educational Institutions/NGOs will be subject to the Indian Income Tax regulations. 

  • Under no circumstances, the intern will be allowed to take up employment in India immediately after completion of the internship programme. 

  • All applicants for internship sponsored by AIESEC will have to meet the above mentioned conditions.

  • Issuance of intern visa will be subject to internal evaluation. 

  • Issuance of intern visa to applicants intending to pursue internship in an NGO and applicants holding passports of other than French may take more than 2 months from the time of submission of the visa application.

ENTRY VISA

 This visa category is for applicants who is/are:-

  1. A person of Indian origin (X-1). 

  2. Spouse and children of a person of Indian nationality or origin (X-1). 

  3. Applicants coming to join Auroville Foundation / Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Puducherry / Missionaries of Charity, Kolkata / similar approved organizations, temples and foreign Buddhist monks coming to join Buddhist Monasteries/other Buddhist organizations for charity work (X-2).

EMPLOYMENT VISA

This visa allows you to travel to India to work for an Indian company, to become an expatriate in an international company or organisation, NGO and for Intra company transfer.

Sub-categories of Employment visa:-

E-1: All cases of employment (except intra company transferees and NGOs)

E-2: For intra company transferees

E-3: For employment in NGOs

E-4: For those coming to execute projects in Power & Steel sectors

E-1X/E-2X/E-3X/E-4X: For dependents of Employment visa holders

Generally, the Embassy of India issues a visa valid for 6 months or 1 year. It is obligatory for any visa extension or renewal of Employment visa to be requested in India at the FRO (Foreigner's Registration Office in Delhi) or the FRRO (Foreigner's Regional Registration Office). This visa permits unlimited stay during the validity of the visa but any stay exceeding 6 months requires a registration at the FRO/FRRO within 14 days of your arrival in India.

  • A letter from the employer addressed to the Embassy of India in Portugal, specifying the exact purpose of the applicant`s visit and the expected start and end dates. This letter should be on company letterhead and written in English with a stamp and signature.
  • A letter from the Indian company, addressed to the Embassy of India in Portugal, specifying the exact purpose of the visit and the expected start and end dates of the first mission as well as the next missions if already planned. This letter should be on company letterhead and written in English with a stamp and signature.
  • A photocopy of the Portuguese company registration "Certidao Permanente".
  • A photocopy of the Indian company registration "Incorporation Certificate".

If the applicant is holding a non-Portuguese passport

  • Copy of Permanent Residence Permit (Titulo de Residencia)

If the applicant is holding a Bangladeshi passport

  • Copy of Permanent Residence Permit (Titulo de Residencia)
  • Copy of bank statement for the last 3 months

    An undertaking stating that the applicant is going for tourism and not for reporting nor will be involved in any journalistic activity.
  • If the applicant is going for documentary/advertisement shooting in India:
    Authorization letter from XP Division of Ministry.

  • Letter from the hospital/doctor in Portuguese attesting the requirement for treatment in India.
  • Letter from the hospital/institution in India confirming the applicant's admission for medical treatment.

If the applicant is of Indian origin (born Indian) and has held an Indian passport in the past

  • A copy of their "Surrender Certificate"
  • A copy of their cancelled Indian passport
  • A "Sworn Affidavit" which can be obtained at the Embassy of India

If the applicant is a minor

  • Photocopy of an ID proof of each parent and child
  • Authorization letter for a minor to travel signed by both parents duly notarized if the parents are in Portugal. If one of the parents is outside Portugal, the authorization letter should be certified by the nearest Indian Mission/MEA, New Delhi.

If the applicant is holding a non-Portuguese passport or having dual nationality

  • Copy of the second passport
  • Copy of valid residence proof for Portugal
  • Copy of Permanent Residence Permit (Titulo de Residencia)
Transit Visa +

TRANSIT VISA

LIST OF DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR A TRANSIT VISA

  • Original passport valid for a minimum of 6 months and having at least 3 blank visa pages.
  • A photocopy of the data page of the passport.
  • Two passport size photographs (5x5 cm). Photos should be glued to the form: the first on page 1 in the box provided and the second on the bottom right-hand corner of page 2.
  • An Indian Government visa application form duly filled online.

LIST OF ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS

  • Proof of an itinerary with specific dates, in the name of the applicant and showing the details of the applicant's transit through India: photocopy of plane tickets or a typed attestation from a travel agency, on company letterhead.
  • Presence of the visa for the final destination inside the applicant's passport.
  • Photocopy of the applicant's visa for the final destination.

If the applicant is of Indian origin (born Indian) and has held an Indian passport in the past

  • A copy of their "Surrender Certificate"
  • A copy of their cancelled Indian passport
  • A "Sworn Affidavit" which can be obtained at the Embassy of India

If the applicant is of Indian origin (born in India) and was granted a nationality other than Indian by birth

  • A copy of the first passport (provided it was delivered in India)
  • A copy of the "Nationality Certificate" specifying that they have obtained their current nationality by naturalization/birth
  • A "Sworn Affidavit" which can be obtained from the Embassy of India

If the applicant is a minor

  • Photocopy of an ID proof of each parent and child
  • Authorization letter for a minor to travel signed by both parents duly notarized if the parents are in Portugal. If one of the parents is outside Portugal, the authorization letter should be certified by the nearest Indian Mission/MEA, New Delhi.

If the applicant is holding a non-Portuguese passport or having dual nationality

  • Copy of the second passport
  • Copy of Permanent Residence Permit (Titulo de Residencia)
Mountaineering Visa +

MOUNTAINEERING VISA

  • Letter from the organization planning the expedition addressed to the Embassy of India in Lisbon specifying the exact purpose of the applicant's visit and expected start and end dates. This letter should be on the organization's letterhead and written in English with a stamp and signature.
  • Duly filled in "Application for climbing the Indian Himalayas by Foreigners" (3 copies) for obtaining clearance from the Indian Mountaineering Foundation and MHA.

If the applicant is of Indian origin (born Indian) and has held an Indian passport in the past

  • A copy of their "Surrender Certificate"
  • A copy of their cancelled Indian passport
  • A "Sworn Affidavit" which can be obtained at the Embassy of India

If the applicant is of Indian origin (born in India) and was granted a nationality other than Indian by birth

  • A copy of the first passport (provided it was delivered in India)
  • A copy of the "Nationality Certificate" specifying that they have obtained their current nationality by naturalization/birth
  • A "Sworn Affidavit" which can be obtained from the Embassy of India

If the applicant is holding a non-Portuguese passport or having dual nationality

  • Copy of Permanent Residence Permit (Titulo de Residencia)
  • Copy of the second passport
Missionary Visa +

MISSIONARY VISA

LIST OF ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS

  • Mission letter from the sponsoring organization in Portugal and invitation letter from the organization in India indicating intended destination in India, expected length of stay, and nature of work to be discharged to be attached along with a guarantee for applicant's maintenance while in India.

If the applicant is of Indian origin (born Indian) and has held an Indian passport in the past

  • A copy of their "Surrender Certificate"
  • A copy of their cancelled Indian passport
  • A "Sworn Affidavit" which can be obtained at the Embassy of India

If the applicant is a minor

  • Photocopy of an ID proof of each parent and child
  • Authorization letter for a minor to travel signed by both parents duly notarized if the parents are in Portugal. If one parent is outside Portugal, the authorization letter should be certified by the nearest Indian Mission/MEA, New Delhi.

If the applicant is holding a non-Portuguese passport or having dual nationality

STUDENT VISA

IMPORTANT: It is not possible to apply for a Student Visa more than 30 days before the start date of the course or internship.

LIST OF DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

LIST OF ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS

  • An original admission letter from the Indian university/school/education institution in English on official letterhead, specifying program type, terms, and duration. Must be stamped and signed (no scans/faxes/e-signatures).

If the studies are financed by the applicant

  • Original bank guarantee letter from the bank on letterhead in the applicant's name, proving ability to cover at least 500 per month for study, accommodation, and living expenses in India for the entire duration.

If the studies are sponsored by a third person

  • Original bank guarantee letter from the bank on letterhead in the third party's name, confirming sponsorship of at least 500 per month for the applicant's study and living costs in India.

If the applicant is going for an internship

  • Letter from Indian company/NGO/educational institution/government body confirming internship period and salary. Must be signed and stamped.
  • For companies: minimum salary must be Rs.3.60 Lakhs per annum.
  • No minimum salary required for internships in NGOs, educational institutions, foreign missions, or government bodies.
  • Proof of company/NGO registration (certificate of incorporation, trust deed).
  • Original "Income Tax Payment Undertaking" on company letterhead, stamped and signed.
  • Proof of graduation (diploma or school certificate). Master's students may submit certification if diploma is pending.
  • Undertaking from the company/organization to ensure departure of internee after completion of internship.

If the applicant is going on an exchange programme

  • Original confirmation from home university of enrollment and transfer to India.
  • Copy of exchange agreement between educational institutions in Portugal (or other) and India.

If studies are taking place only in India

  • Motivation letter in English explaining reasons for studying in India and prior educational background. Attach supporting documents like diplomas, certificates, etc.

If going for internship in an educational institution

  • Letter from Portuguese school on letterhead confirming the internship is mandatory for the studies.

If going for medical or paramedical studies

  • No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Ministry of Health in India.

If the applicant is of Indian origin (born Indian) and has held an Indian passport in the past

  • Copy of "Surrender Certificate"
  • Copy of cancelled Indian passport

If the applicant is a minor

  • Photocopy of an ID proof of each parent and child
  • Authorization letter signed by both parents and notarized in Portugal. If a parent is abroad, letter must be certified by nearest Indian Mission/MEA, New Delhi.

If the applicant holds a non-Portuguese passport

  • Copy of Permanent Residence Permit (Titulo de Residencia)

If the applicant holds a Bangladeshi passport

  • Copy of Permanent Residence Permit (Titulo de Residencia)

    • A copy of their "Surrender Certificate"

  • If the applicant wishes to join Auroville Foundation / Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Puducherry / Missionaries of Charity, Kolkata / similar approved organizations, temples, Buddhist Monasteries or other Buddhist organizations for charity work:
    Official invitation letter issued by the Secretary of the respective organization. This document must be provided in its original sealed envelope.
  • If the applicant is a minor:
    • Photocopy of an ID proof of each parent and child
    • Authorization letter for a minor to travel signed by both parents duly notarized if the parents are in Portugal; if one parent is outside Portugal, authorization letter to be certified by nearest Indian Mission/MEA, New Delhi.
  • If the applicant is holding a non-Portuguese passport or has dual nationality:
    • Copy of the second passport
    • Copy of Permanent Residence Permit (Titulo de Residencia)
Employment Visa +

EMPLOYMENT VISA

LIST OF REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

  • Original passport valid for a minimum of 6 months and having at least 3 blank visa pages.
  • A photocopy of the data page of the passport.
  • Two passport size photographs (5X5 cm).

LIST OF ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS

  • The original employment contract of the applicant (in English). This should be stamped and signed by the Indian company (this document will be retained at the Embassy).
    • The contract should show a minimum salary of 16.25 lakhs per annum.
    • Minimum benchmark for salary is exempt in the cases of ethnic cooks (only those employed by Foreign Missions), French language teachers, diplomatic mission employees.
    • For NGOs - Honorarium up to a ceiling of Rs.10,000/- per month is applicable/eligible.
    • For persons of Indian origin and spouse/children of Indian citizen/OCI card holder (other than those who are registered as OCI card holder) must draw a minimum salary of Rs.3.60 Lakh per annum.
  • The 'Certificate of incorporation' of the Indian company or 'Registration Certificate' of the NGO.
  • An undertaking written on the company letterhead (in English) from the Indian company stating that no Indian national has the skills/expertise required nor is eligible for the job that you are being hired for. This letter will have to be in original, stamped and signed.
  • Undertaking written on the company letterhead (in English) as per the standard model 'Income tax payment undertaking' in original, stamped and signed. Your salary must be mentioned in this document.
  • The applicant's CV (in English).
  • Photocopies of diplomas or professional certificates justifying the applicant's expertise in the proposed field of work in Portuguese or in English. All foreign diplomas will need to be translated to English. If you are teaching Portuguese, a diploma confirming that you have the qualifications to teach is necessary.
  • If the applicant is of Indian origin (born Indian) and has held an Indian passport in the past (attach one of the documents below with the application form):
    • A copy of their "Surrender Certificate"
    • A copy of their cancelled Indian passport
  • If the applicant is holding a non-Portuguese Passport:
