Passport General Information

  1. The applicant has to fill out the form online and bring a printout of the form. The application form can be filled out through this URL https://portal3.passportindia.gov.in/Online/index.html. All applications for any passport service, whether for a new passport, re-issue of passport, change of name, appearance etc. will be made through this online link only.

  2. The Embassy follows an online appointment system for all consular services including passport services. To book an appointment, please visit

    . The applicants should visit the Embassy as per the date of the appointment. Passport applications are accepted on Monday to Friday, except on Wednesday between 0930 hours and 1200 hours.

  3. Normal processing time for reissue of passport is around 45 days. Lost passport may take longer.

  5. All Indian passports holders who hold passports with handwritten endorsements for extension of the validity of the passport, are advised to apply for Machine Readable Passport to comply with the regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). 

  6. All the personal details should be filled in correctly. Incorrectly or partially filled forms will not be accepted. Your Indian permanent address should be filled in the field of address to be printed and your local permanent address should be filled in the field of other address.

  7. The Registration of birth of minors has to be registered at the concerned Embassy of India or Consulate where the child is born under Section 4(1) of the Citizenship Act, 1955.

  8. Please note: Birth registration of a child born to Indian parents should be done in the Embassy within one year of the birth, otherwise there will be delay in issuing a passport to the child.

  9. In the case of minors, the form should be signed by both the parents and their passport and residence card copies should be attached to the process. In case, one of the parent live outside Portugal, duly attested No Objection Certificate from the parent is required. 

  10. Those who do not have residence cards will be given 5 years validity passport. The fee for the short-validity passport will remain the same.

  11. In case of the addition of the spouse's name, the applicant has to provide a marriage certificate duly apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs, India and copy of the spouse's passport or any other ID proof.

  12. In case of a change of address, the applicant can provide a copy of the Aadhaar Card/electricity bill/water bill or any other utility bill.

  13. In case of exclusion of the spouse's name, the applicant has to provide a divorce paper duly apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi.

  14. If the passport is needed due to a change in name, cuttings of two leading newspapers (one in India and the other in Portugal) carrying advertisements notifying the change of name and asking for any objection there of to be reported to the Embassy of India, Lisbon, Portugal within 30 days of the publication, should be submitted. The applicant should also submit a general sworn affidavit. Also, two documents issued by the Govt. of India with corrected names are required.

  15. For minor correction in place of birth, the applicant needs to bring duly apostilled birth certificate issued by the competent authorities in India.  

  16. If needed, any other additional document can be asked from the applicant.
