Statement on issues concerning Indian community in Portugal

The Embassy of India has been informed about some recent instances of discrimination faced by members of the Indian community in Portugal, including the one at Odivelas Gurudwara on 8th June 2025.

India has long been recognized for its tradition of tolerance and respect for diverse faiths and viewpoints, which is in the peaceful coexistence of various faiths, religions and communities throughout its history. Drawing from this rich heritage, the Indian diaspora brings with it the spirit of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam"-the world is one family-to its host countries, including Portugal.

The Indian diaspora, comprising over 35.4 million people globally, has contributed positively to the development of their host countries. Known for their hardworking and peaceful nature, and strong values, the Indian diaspora has enriched the cultural fabric of the nations in which they reside.

The Embassy looks forward to the continued support of the authorities in Portugal to ensure the safety, security and dignity of the Indian community in Portugal and to prevent instances of discrimination in any form against them.
