Celebration of 101st birth anniversary of Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya at Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa (FLUL), 25.09.2017

To celebrate the 101st birth anniversary of Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, Embassy of India in Lisbon and Center for Indian Studies of Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa (FLUL) organised a panel discussion on "Transforming India through People's Empowerment" at Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa (FLUL) on September 25, 2017. H.E. Ambassador of India to Portugal Mrs. K. Nandini Singla and Associate Dean (Subdirector) of FLUL Prof. Alexandra Assis Rosa gave the opening remarks. The panellists for discussion were: 1. Professor Rosa Maria Perez - Department of Anthropology, ISCTE-IUL, and visiting Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology in Gandhinagar, Gujarat 2. Dr. Constantino Xavier -Fellow at Carnegie India, New Delhi 3. Dr. Leonidio Ferreira - Subdirector of Diário de Notícias 4. Dr. Edgar Valles – President of Casa de Goa The discussion was moderated by Professor Shiv Kumar Singh – Center for Indian Studies – FLUL. Panellists deliberated upon the “Antyodaya” concept by Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya which in the current context signifies poverty alleviation and integrating humanism. The debate also addressed efforts underway in India to empower Indians through various initiatives to eliminate poverty. It focussed on the change in approach from giving assistance to empower people economically and socially, especially the underprivileged sections and women, through various schemes aimed at creating employment. The panel discussion included an interactive Q&A Session with the audience.
