Folk dancers from Rajasthan, led by Faqir Khan, performing at the Orient Museum, Lisbon, on June 11, 2014. The performance was organized by the Embassy of India in Lisbon and Fundação Oriente, with support from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.

Faqir Khan is a renowned percussionist of the Manganiar community of western Rajasthan. Manganiar is the largest hereditary musician caste whose music has been supported by aristocrats for generations. Faqir Khan learnt his art from his father at an early age. He plays a very unique percussion instrument, “Khartaal”, made of teak wood. This distinguished group has given performances in France, Switzerland, Germany, the US, Belgium, Spain, Hong Kong, China, Pakistan, Jordan, Israel, Thailand, Canada and the United Kingdom since 1993.

The tour is a step towards the creation of a multi-faceted contemporary relationship between India and Portugal, of which culture is an important component. It provides the people of Portugal an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the colourful and vibrant folk traditions of India, leading to the deepening of ties between India and Portugal.
