Ambassador Inaugurates First Indian Film Festival in Ponta Delgada, Azores

Ambassador Shri Punnet Roy Kundal, inaugurated the first-ever Indian Film Festival in Ponta Delgada, Azores, organized by the Embassy of India, Lisbon in collaboration with Regional government of Ponta Delgada. The inaugural event was attended by distinguished personalities from various sectors of society, marking a milestone in the cultural exchange between India and Portugal.

The festival forms part of the celebrations to mark 50 years of diplomatic relations between India and Portugal, reflecting the growing warmth and dynamism in bilateral ties.

The opening evening featured the screening of English Vinglish, which received an excellent response from the audience. The event also included vibrant cultural performances that highlighted the richness of Indian traditions through music and dance, setting a festive and colourful tone for the evening.

On 25 October, the celebrations continued with an Indian dance workshop conducted by the Jhankar Group, offering participants an opportunity to experience the diversity and rhythm of Indian performing arts. The films Mhorkya (Marathi) and Vikram (Tamil), both presented with Portuguese subtitles, were also screened, giving audiences in the Azores a glimpse into the linguistic and cultural diversity of Indian cinema.

The Indian Film Festival in the Azores is part of the Embassy’s ongoing efforts to promote cultural understanding and to strengthen the enduring bonds of friendship between India and Portugal.
