Ambassador Inaugurated the Centenary Anniversary Celebration of Ritwik Ghatak at Cinemateca Portuguesa, Lisbon

The Centenary Anniversary Celebration of renowned Indian filmmaker Ritwik Kumar Ghatak was held on 2nd December 2025 at Cinemateca Portuguesa , Museu do Cinema in Lisbon. The event organized by the Embassy of India, Lisbon, in collaboration with Cinemateca Portuguesa, the event brought together distinguished guests from the worlds of cinema, diplomacy, and culture, underscoring the profound cultural connections between India and Portugal through film and the arts.

The programme was inaugurated by Ambassador Shri Puneet Roy Kundal, accompanied by Dr. Marcos Perestrello, Vice President of the Assembly of the Republic of Portugal, and Mr. Rui Machado, Director of Cinemateca Portuguesa. In his address, the Ambassador highlighted the genius of Ritwik Kumar Ghatak and his timeless and priceless contributions not only to Indian cinema but to the world of cinema as well.

The festivities transitioned into a cocktail reception downstairs, enlivened by a captivating cultural performance from Isha Arts, showcasing the vibrancy of Indian performing traditions. The highlight was the screening of Ghatak's masterpiece Meghe Dhaka Tara, which captivated a full-house audience with its timeless narrative and emotional depth.

As part of the month-long tribute to Ghatak ,one of India's greatest directors, celebrated for his poignant explorations of social realities, the Partition, and women's lives,the evening honored his legacy, including accolades like the National Film Award and the Padma Shri in 1970. The retrospective features nine landmark films screened over 18 days.

This celebration reflects the Embassy's commitment to fostering dialogue and deepening the enduring friendship between India and Portugal, especially during the 50th anniversary year of Indo-Portuguese diplomatic relations.
